Fun Activities for Kids

We hope you caught our first virtual Fun Animal Friday event with the Living Coast Discovery Center! We learned about creatures that live in our local San Diego tide pools, and for this special ocean-themed craft, we will be creating sea creatures out of materials you may have thrown away.

Explore nature and go on a colorful scavenger hunt!

Today you will get to make a painting just like the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian!

Activity best for children age 4 and up

Invisible ink isn’t just for spies—you can write your own secret message right in your kitchen! Check out this cool way to learn about chemicial reactions, using ingredients from your own home.
Why does this work? Lemon juice is an acid and weakens the paper. The salt and crayons are a base. When these two chemicals mix together they react and the base helps you see the acidic message!

Activity best for ages 4 and up (with adult supervision)

During this time, you are exposing children to an aspect of a country's culture. Today we are going to learn a little bit more about Mexico! Culture can include language, history, scientific discoveries, geography, animals, art, and so much more!

Activity best for children age 3 and up

During this time you are challenging kids to be engineers! Give children a question or problem to solve by engineering a new design. There is not right or wrong way to make a design if it responds to the challenge. Today's challenge: Build a robot!

Practice your engineering skills by trying to solve a special challenge! This can be done anywhere using household materials.

Can you use toilet paper rolls and other recyclables to create your own mini ball wall, similar to the one at the Museum? Create a path for a marble or ball to travel down with a little help from gravity. 

Exercise is so important to help children learn to regulate their body—and get their sillies out.  Do this fun activity to get kids moving. This card game will also help children recognize numbers and give them exposure to counting.

On the first Friday of every month, the Museum partners with Jimbo's... Naturally! to bring new ideas for tasty treats that families can make together at home. Using seasonal ingredients that can be found in the garden is a great way to engage children in activities and help them learn more about nutrition. For those ingredients you can't get in your backyard, you can visit Jimbo's!
