During this time, you are exposing children to an aspect of a country's culture. Today we are going to learn a little bit more about Ancient Egypt! Culture can include language, history, scientific discoveries, geography, animals, art, and so much more!
Activity best for children age 3 and up
Egypt is a country located in Africa. Egypt is famous for its Ancient Civilization that created many unique technologies, art, and records. One of the creations of Ancient Egyptians was the Great Pyramid of Giza. The pyramid is so unique that it is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World! Ancient Egyptians also created their own form of writing using symbols or pictures. The Ancient Egyptian alphabet is known as hieroglyphics. Ancient Egyptians would write these symbols on special paper called papyrus or carve them into stone to tell stories and keep records. Today you’re going to create your own Ancient Egyptian writing using hieroglyphics!
Materials
Playdough, clay, or salt dough*
*We've included a simple salt dough recipe below!
Plastic spoon, plastic knife, popsicle stick, or pencil
Hieroglyphic alphabet (included below)
Print this or have it up on your phone, tablet, or computer for reference
Directions
Step 1
Roll out your dough and cut it into a rectangular shape.
Step 2
Write your name (or another message of your choice) in hieroglyphics in your dough. Use your plastic spoon, plastic knife, popsicle stick, or pencil to help you carve the different symbols!
Step 3
Allow your hieroglyphics to air dry. (This may take up to 2 days).

Salt Dough Recipe
Ingredients
2 cups flour
2 cups salt
1/2 - 3/4 cups water
Mixing bowl
Mixing spoon
Directions
Step 1
Mix the flour and salt together
Step 2
Add 1/2 cup water and mix with the flour and salt.
Step 3
Knead the dough
