"Path to Discovery" Campaign for the New Museum Location
We’ve found a new home! San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum (SDCDM) has found a new property and building (320 N. Broadway in Escondido across the street from Grape Day Park) to meet the increasing need for alternative learning experiences for children, families and school groups. Approximately three times larger and more visible than the current facility, it has the capacity to serve tens of thousands more people per year. The increased educational programming, visibility, size and exposure of the new location is projected to significantly grow the number of visitors served. You are invited to join us on our "Path to Discovery" campaign journey to create a new hands-on educational resource for children and families!

What is the goal of the campaign?
The "Path to Discovery" campaign’s goal is to raise $3.2 million over the next five years, which will include the acquisition and purchase of the new property and building, initial construction, new expanded exhibits and programs and operating capital. To date, $1.1 million has been secured toward the purchase of the property and the opening of the Museum to the public with initial new exhibits and programs. Additional exhibits and expanded programs will be phased in as funds are raised.

Why the need for a new facility?
The new space will meet the growing need for alternative-learning experiences for children, families and school groups. While the Museum has been happy to grow into fully utilizing the current 4,500 square foot space over the past several years, SDCDM has now outgrown the 63 person capacity space, which allows for only two school classes to visit SDCDM at any given time. The current SDCDM location is not visible from the street and can be difficult for people to find and access. These factors limit the number of people who are able to experience SDCDM. The new location will also allow for increased earned income from sources such as admissions, membership, group visits, seasonal camps, special programming and retail activities.

What is the new facility like?
With over 12,000 square feet of indoor-outdoor educational exhibit and programming space and much more visibility than the current location, the new 6,000 square foot building and 6,000 square foot outdoor area has the capability to serve tens of thousands of people every year. SDCDM can then further its mission to broaden children’s understanding of science, the arts, and world cultures by increasing the number and scope of exhibits and programs. Expanded space will also allow for new programming, such as seasonal camps and group events.

Where is funding for the New Museum coming from?
The "Path to Discovery" campaign will require broad community support from individuals, businesses, government and foundations. To date, SDCDM has received significant commitments for support from the Linden Root Dickinson Foundation and the SDCDM board of directors (100% financial contribution), as well as additional individual, corporate and foundation support as we continue toward raising the remaining $2.1 million.
